Bonding with your unborn baby during pregnancy
You, your partner, and your family must form a strong early bond with your baby. Their brains develop per how you take care of them and meet their requirements. This is true for both, unborn and newborn babies.
Bonding before birth to your unborn baby
As soon as you are at week 16, and earlier, your baby can hear you talking.
Babies are particularly sensitive to their mothers' voices, but anyone can speak or sing to them; your baby will enjoy hearing from everyone.
This supports your baby to familiarize themselves with voices to feel comfortable and secure. It also polishes their hearing and prepares their speech functions for when the time comes.
What could a baby experience while still in the womb?
Sound
Your unborn baby will start to notice bodily sounds like your heartbeat and stomach grumbling around the 16th week of your pregnancy. A baby usually becomes capable of responding to sounds both within and outside of the mother's body at the 28th week of pregnancy.
Inside the uterus, your baby hears roughly half the amount of outside noise that we do. However, if exposed to an abrupt loud noise, unborn children may still get disturbed.
Language development
According to some studies. Early language development may start before birth. Your infant may begin to recognize specific vowels of your language after 32 weeks.
Memory
Babies may recall specific music played to them in the womb in addition to recalling certain sounds that they heard from their mothers.
Sight
The retinas of developing fetuses are ready to open by the 20th week, and by the 22nd week, they can sense light. However, even after birth, a baby's eyes continue to develop.
Sensation
By the 18th week, babies prefer to sleep in their mother’s womb when she is awake because the movement helps put them to sleep. At 22 weeks, they can feel pain, and by the 26th week, they can move in reaction to their mother's belly being touched.
Different ways to bond with your unborn baby
- Talk and sing to your unborn baby.
- Gently massage your belly
- When your baby kicks, respond to it. In the third trimester, you can try to feel your baby by gently pushing against the area of the kick. Check whether the baby responds.
- Play music for the infant. Lullabies and other music that mirrors a heartbeat of about 60 beats per minute are beneficial.
- Rest, take care of yourself, and try to minimize your worry. There is proof that a mother's pregnancy will result in a healthier baby if she is less stressed. If you require a listener, your partner or any loved one may be able to help.
Can fathers form a bond with the unborn baby?
Yes, the baby’s father or other caregivers can also bond with the baby before birth. Following are a few ways to do that.
- Massage the baby bump (with the mother’s consent).
- Feel the kicks of the baby as frequently as possible.
- Accompany the mother for her ultrasound visits.
- To help the infant become accustomed to your voice, read, and talk to them.
- Have discussions with other parents. Allow them to express their sentiments regarding their pregnancy and delivery experience as you express your own.
Older siblings can bond with the baby in the womb
Your toddler or young child might develop a bond with the newborn by being prepared for the anticipated birth. Talking to them regarding their new sibling, reading them books about pregnancy and babies, letting them touch your belly to feel the baby kick, and making a gift for the baby together are a few examples of how to do this.
By taking them to buy baby goods or help with the nursery setup, you can have your toddler participate in the preparation for their little sibling’s arrival.
