What are fragrances?
Fragrances are substances that combine different organic compounds that give a pleasant and distinct scent. The chief purpose of using fragrances is to conceal unpleasant odors and aromas.
Composition of fragrances:
It can be difficult to tell what makes a fragrance because almost hundreds of ingredients are combined to manufacture a certain fragrance. Two types of ingredients are used to synthesize fragrances:
Extracted from natural sources
These are extracted from different plant parts, including root, stem, bark, herb, or flower—Lavender, rosewood, jasmine, sandalwood, lotus nut, etc.
Benefits:
Fragrances derived from natural sources are very much liked by people because they are:
- safe.
- Last for a long while.
- Have a clean and natural scent.
- Can release muscular stress if used with a carrier oil.
Obtained synthetically
These are manufactured in laboratories using petrochemical by-products and artificial chemicals. They are usually a combination of synthetic scents and essential oils.
Benefits:
Not all synthetic fragrances are considered bad. Many of them are used widely in products because they:
- Have long-lasting scents.
- Are cheaper as compared to the natural ones.
- Have a longer shelf life.
- Can mimic almost any fragrance.
Below we have mentioned five classes of compounds that are mostly used as an ingredient in making fragrances;
- Esters
- Alcohols
- Ketones
- Lactones
- Aldehydes
Where can you find the fragrances?
The uses of fragrances are now not only limited to the scents applied to the body. They are found in many products, including perfumes, colognes, deodorants, cosmetics, soaps, shampoos, body washes, candles, toiletries, and many more.
Why are fragrances used?
Fragrances are widely used worldwide in various ways because of the never-ending love of humans for fragrances. Using fragrances in perfumes, deodorants, colognes, and mists will make you all set to step out confidently and positively impact social relationships. Natural fragrances are used in famous aromatherapy to treat various disorders such as depression, insomnia, eczema, etc. When used carefully in cosmetics, fragrances can produce aesthetically pleasing results on the skin. People who invest so much in skincare products are conscious of their fragrances so that the desired effects and relaxation of the mind can be obtained.
