What Is Shepherd’s Pie?
It is a traditional English dish. It is a pie made with minced meat and mashed potatoes on top. There are numerous versions, but they always have a bottom of juicy ground minced beef and a layer of potatoes, and bake until crisp and bubbling. Shepherd's pie, also known as cottage pie, was made as a smart way to use up leftover meat and veggie by baking it in a potato-topped casserole. Most people now make it on purpose rather than as a leftover meal.
Ingredients:
- 1 tbsp. vegetable oil
- 300 g beef mince
- 200 g lamb mince
- 1 cup beef stock
- 1 celery stalk chopped
- 1 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
- 3 tbsp. tomato paste
- ¼ leek stalk chopped
- 4 tbsp. peas frozen
- 60 g butter
- 3 tbsp. milk
- 1 tbsp. all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp. marjoram
- ¼ nutmeg
- 3 tsp. pepper
- 50 g cheese grated
- 2 tsp. salt
- 2 potatoes
Directions:
1- In a pan, heat the oil. Cook the meat with celery until it is brown, breaking up any lumps with a wooden spoon. Worcestershire sauce and tomato paste are added. Cook and stir for a few minutes.
2- Turn the heat down to low, add the stock and flour, and cook for thirty min, or until the sauce is thick. Add the chopped leeks and peas to the dish a few minutes before it's done cooking.
3- Remove from the heat, and season it with marjoram, pepper, and salt.
4- Before adding potatoes to water in a saucepan, they must be peeled and chopped. Over high heat, bring to a boil. When the water begins to boil, turn to a low flame, and continue to cook for 15 minutes, or when the potatoes are tender.
5- Take the pan off the heat. In a large saucepan, combine the potatoes, cheese, butter, milk, pepper, salt, and ¼ nutmeg. Mashed or blended potatoes should be smooth.
6- Preheat the oven at 355°F (180 degrees Celsius).
7- In a baking dish put the beef sauce. Topped with mashed potatoes. Using your fork, gently fluff up the mashed potatoes all the way around the dish.
8- Bake for 25 to 30 minutes at 350°F, or until the top is golden brown.
* Let the dish rest for 5-10 minutes before serving. Enjoy!
