How is women's mental health different?
Mental health affects us all, but it can be difficult to navigate for women. Many of us are conditioned to feel less than others and put our needs last. And because of this, we often do not take the time to address our mental health needs. But the truth is that taking charge of your mental health is essential for a fulfilling life. Women's Mental Health Month is an important reminder that although everyone needs to take care of their mental health, women need and deserve special attention when caring for our minds.
Why is women's mental health important?
Women are often at greater risk than men for mental health issues due to several factors, such as external pressure from social expectations, unequal access to healthcare, previous trauma, and other sources of chronic stress. Women can have trouble in finding support for their mental health needs and resources for dealing with crises. Women's Mental Health Month aims to bridge this gap by increasing public education about how mental health affects women, reducing stigma around seeking help for mental health struggles, and providing additional resources specifically tailored to the needs of women.
Women's Mental Health Statistics
It is no secret that women experience unique mental health challenges and disorders at higher rates than men. In fact, according to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, one in five women in the U.S. live with a mental illness, compared to just over one in eight men.
Many factors contribute to the higher rates of mental illness among women, including hormonal changes, stress from juggling work and home life, trauma from abuse or sexual assault, and more. Whatever the cause, it is important to seek help if you are struggling with your mental health.
