1. Fixed Learning

It is an older variant of online learning, wherein knowledge dissemination is executed through the traditional structure of passing the same information to a group of pupils as determined by the instructors. However, multimedia, like audio-visual tools, are used in the instructions. Such a form of online learning has existed since the mid-20th century. The major benefit of e-learning that is fixed is the completion of a time-sensitive schedule with fixed curriculums, such as crash courses for a competitive exam.

2. Adaptive e-Learning

It is another type of e-learning wherein the primary focus is on flexibility. In adaptive e-learning, all study materials are customized to fit a pupil’s learning preferences. Here, attention is paid to various aspects of knowledge acquisition, such as skills, abilities, and individual performances. Adaptive learning is personalized as per the pace desired by the student. The benefits of e-learning that is adaptive include a higher retention rate, increased accessibility, etc. Online courses by sites like Coursera, Udemy, etc., are examples of adaptive e-learning.

3. Interactive e-Learning

In interactive e-learning, both students and teachers community freely and openly. Thus, both parties can ‘interact’ to change the curriculum. Such type of e-learning has become ubiquitous after the COVID-19 pandemic. Various schools and colleges now co-opt interactive e-learning, wherein classes are held digitally and are centered around robust collaboration and not solely the transfer of knowledge from tutors to pupils. Interactive e-learning works best in a limited and close-knit environment, with ample time and comfort for students to express themselves freely. Tutor classes in schools and colleges are an example of interactive e-learning.

4. Individual eLearning

It is a scenario wherein a student learns independently, without any peer communication. Individual e-learning can be formal or informal. For instance, pupils can utilize the home learning resources given to their college professors or schoolteachers to customize an individual e-learning system at home. Simultaneously, when a person learns from YouTube or other knowledge-distribution platforms at their own pace, without communicating with peers, it can be deemed individual e-learning. The benefit of e-learning that is identified is that students can attain knowledge based on personal goals and attributes as opposed to depending on teachers’ and peers’ standards.

5. Asynchronous e-Learning

Last but not least, the fifth type of online learning is known as asynchronous e-learning, wherein students learn from a different location. Asynchronous e-learning is flexible, as pupils create their schedules. When done engagingly, asynchronous e-learning can also produce user-generated content. For example, as opposed to multiple-choice tests, learners could submit a video of themselves talking about or displaying their newly-acquired skills. The major benefit of e-learning that is asynchronous is that even the most downtrodden communities from nooks and crannies of the world can attain the best-quality education similar to those from privileged sections. Thus, it can foster a more egalitarian education system.
